Religion 2013 Part Two

So I suppose one of the biggest issues I have with organized religion, and the whole bible thing is this. The old Testament was written approximately 1400 B.C to 400 B.C. So within a span of a thousand years before the birth of Christ. The New Testament is believed to have been written around 70 A.D. to 90 A.D. I say around because they have no idea. So through the course of a few thousand years these gospels were formed. The bible is taken from hundreds of scrolls found in various parts of the middle east. It is know that many other scrolls were found but left out of the bible because it was felt that they were not written by prophets but by those out to spread propaganda and discredit the teachings of Jesus Christ. It would be interesting if the Catholic church ever released these scrolls for the public to read. But they are locked away somewhere heavily guarded I am sure. Or they were destroyed.

th (1)So answer me this. Why has there not been a single word sent down by God for his followers sense 90 A.D. That’s a pretty huge break in time. No scrolls, no tablets, no burning bushes, nothing. How can he possibly expect his children to believe in something that has not been seen or heard from since pretty much the creation of life.

I know people say that God is all-knowing and is perfect in nature. Yet it was said in Genesis 6.6. ” The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in his heart.” So we know he makes mistakes. My theory is that by the time the Roman Empire hit he finally just had enough and said. “I’m outta here”.

In Isaiah 13 God says, “Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword.
Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.” That’s pretty harsh don’t ya think. Maybe the sinners out numbered the swords, who knows. But to me its means it’s pretty much okay to kill children, rape women, and slay men in the name of the Lord. Makes all these Holy wars going on in the middle east seems justified now doesn’t it.

And my favorite passage from the bible is Psalms 58:10 “The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked”. Hell yeah! After all, vengeance is not one of the seven deadly sins now is it, if anything it pretty much insures you a place in Heaven.

But with that said. Why hasn’t a single word been bestowed upon us in all this time. Why were there scrolls not made accessible to the people. Why do preachers always read from the same old scriptures. Should there not be a new book with new gospels and new tales of divine enlightenment.

Now look at the Ten Commandments. I love these. The second one says “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath”. To me this means statues of Jesus as well as crosses. Yet almost every single church in the world ignore this commandment all together. And of course “Thou shalt not kill and thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house.” To me war violates both of those pretty well. Never does it say, well unless you absolutely have to.

Then again if it’s in vengeance I guess it is ok. Hell anything goes at that point.

We should be one nation under the constitution, not under God. We should stop playing God. And this whole thing with marriage gets me going as well. Marriage is a ceremony to a promise. Plain and simple. Most like to make it more personal by doing this under the eyes of God. Whatever. If two people live under the same roof and have made the choice to combine lives for financial stability should be able to enter a civil union through the courts in order for no one person can take advantage of the other. All unions should be equal. The whole ritual of marriage is a personal choice made by those involved. You should be able to be married without being in a civil union and be in a civil union without being married. Why does the government get involved in any way what so ever. It’s like saying if you’re not circumcised than in the eyes of the law you’re not legally an adult male. Rituals have no place in the White House.

And according to the bible the Hebrews/Israelites are the chosen people. And those who control Israel in the final days will be allowed into Heaven. So if you don’t live in Israel maybe you should find another bible to worship with. Oh wait, that was the whole purpose of the New Testament. I forgot.

Anyway, kinda lost the point I was getting to. Oh yeah, my theory is if this God of the testaments did exists once upon a time, he left a long time ago. That’s not to say I don’t believe in God. That’s just to say I can’t put much faith in a book that was put together such a long time ago and that has way too many inconsistencies within it’s pages. Your heart knows the truth, just seek within and believe in what it’s telling you.

  1. Interesting thoughts, Paul. I grew up with religion much as you did. Spent my twenty’s trying to reconcile the questions I had about it. Now I’m at a place where I feel that ‘god’ can be found in many things, not just the words of a few scribes and scholars. But that’s me. Wish you peace 🙂
